GANDHINAGAR: The per capita annual income of state has increased to Rs 45,773, but simultaneously the debt on each resident's head has gone up to Rs 14,076 in 2008-09. These figures were revealed in the state Assembly here on Tuesday, in reply to Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar's question. In February this year, government had stated that per capita income for the financial year 2006-07 was Rs 37,532 and debt stood at Rs 13,371.61.
State finance minister Vajubhai Vala said the total debt of state was divided by total population which was 5.6 crore. The total debt of state government as on May 31, 2009 was an estimated Rs 85,793 crore. He said government was paying Rs 7,065 crore as interest. The government was taking debt only to meet the development expenditure in the state.
Vala added that there was no indiscipline in the government. Central government has given Rs 471 crore to state for keeping its fiscal deficit below three percent and also to have a zero revenue deficit.
Earlier, government had said the total debt of Central government on state government as on December 31, 2008 was Rs 10,684.86 crore.
