Gujaratstartups, SURAT: After a long time, the Indian Diamond Institute (IDI) will get its due place in the world's biggest diamond cutting and polishing centre as diamantaires associated with the newly formed Surat Diamond Sourcing (India) Limited (SDSL) have asked its authorities to provide technical expertise and an office space to them to start the company's operation.

K K Sharma, executive director of IDI, said, "This is a big development in the global diamond industry and we would be more than happy to be associated with the institute in providing technical and other infrastructural facilities for starting the SDSL operations in the city. IDI will be a jewel in the crown of SDSL."

According to Sharma, the IDI facilitated the first ever meeting of more than 60 top guns of Surat's diamond industry regarding the formation of the new company at its newly built City Centre at Vesu held few days ago. The decision of forming a company, too, was taken at the Vesu facility on August 15.

Asked how the IDI would be benefited, Sharma said, "SDSL is a prestigious project of Surat diamantaires. Many young talents from our institute will get a chance to work for the company. The company would be requiring the help of skilled rough diamond assorters and designers in a big way as it would be sourcing huge quantity of rough diamonds."

"More roughs coming in the city would naturally require more skilled artisans. However, I foresee an influx of diamond polishers, mostly young people, into the trade in the next few months," added Sharma.

Ashit Mehta, founder member of SDSL and chairman of Blue Star, said, "We want to take the benefit of 30-year-long experience of the IDI authorities in the field of diamonds. Our newly formed company will take the help of the budding talents of the institute in a big way."
