Police Recruitment Goes Corporate Way

Police recruitment goes corporate way

Gujaratstartups, AHMEDABAD: The police recruitment process just got a corporate touch in Gujarat. Taking a leaf out of corporate recruitments, the Gujarat police has begun drawing up psychological and professional profiles of the wannabe policemen.

According to Gujarat police officials, for the first time biometrics have been used right from the first stage of recruitment.

The recruitment is now two pronged: First, each candidate is grilled by a team of two IPS officers and a GAS officer on issues ranging from education to extra curricular activities to why he wants to join the force.

Second, the candidate is silently evaluated by a psychology professor. The psychological profile, say police officials, will help reveal the true identity of the candidate which may be hidden behind the veil of polished behaviour.

The third and final round, which started on Monday, is personal interview. Generally chaired by senior police officials, this time the officials have roped in psychology experts. "We have roped in seven psychology professors and clinical psychologists from government colleges to assess the candidates. the experts will not only ask questions but also register the candidates' body language and attitude," said Bhatia. The recruitment board will select 680 sub-inspectors for the state police force.

This corporatised recruitment system was taken up by the state police recruitment board during the recently concluded drive to fill up about 10,000 vacant places in various ranks of Gujarat police.

Ashish Bhatia, chairman of police recruitment board for sub-inspectors, told TOI that several new methods have been implemented. "We had a mammoth task of selecting desirable candidates from nearly 5 lakh applications for various posts ranging from constable to sub-inspectors. Thus, scrutiny at every stage was a pre-requisite," he said.

All the applicants were asked to feed their fingerprints in a detector and the same print was verified at every subsequent stage to ascertain it was the same candidate. By employing this method, the officials could detect seven dummy candidates in physical examination taken earlier this year.
