RAJKOT: Mattresses and carpets worth Rs 3.5 lakh were impounded from a ship from Sharjah, which docked at Salaya port in Jamnagar on Saturday,following a tip-off to the Customs department officials. As per information received by the department, the goods were being shipped to Salaya on a regular basis in connivance with some officials of the department.

Customs department swung into action after its received an alert that Al-Masumsha', the ship from Sharjah had anchored with the supply of valuable mattresses and carpets. "We raided the ship and seized goods mainly Arabian mattresses and carpets," said custom superintendent MM Dholakia.

"However, none of the officials, who were allegedly involved could be arrested. It's suspected the officials who conspired were among those who were transferred via a recent Annual General Transfer (AGT) order. Meanwhile, unaware of their transfer, the ship had arrived," he said, adding, "We are conducting our investigations."
