The experiences of a group of farmers, who visited Israel recently, has inspired the state-owned Gujarat Green Revolution Company (GGRC) to offer loans and subsidies to promote drip and sprinkler irrigation in the state.
Potato farmers from Deesa in Sabarkantha district, the state’s highest potato producer, bought sprinklers and employed drip irrigation in 2002, and their yield and the quality of produce improved considerably.
Nevertheless, they used their own money to visit Israel to witness first-hand and learn more about the same technique.
Kishor Kachchva, one of the farmers, said: “Water is metered in Israel. Farmers make an economic and judicious usage of water. Besides sprinklers and drip, plastic sheets are laid on land to save water.”
The group is now intent on conserving water back home and telling their fellow farmers to do the same. The GGRC has now provided farmers assistance to implement the same.
