AHMEDABAD: As if lack of civic amenities were not enough, residents of Gota housing society have now complained of getting threat calls from a particular political outfit that does not want this issue to be highlighted before election results are out.

On Thursday evening the threat calls were made and some residents rushed to seek help from noted danseuse and independent Lok Sabha candidate from Gandhinagar constituency, Mallika Sarabhai. Sarabhai has been championing the Gota residents' cause.

More than 27,000 people stay in the Gota housing society without clean drinking water supply and even the most basic civic amenities.

A resident of Gota housing society, Praveen Patel said, "The threatening calls started after TOI reports that highlighted the apathy of state government yowards residents living here. We have been threatened by a former sarpanch of Gota for raising our voices against the lack of basic amenities which force the residents to live in sub-human conditions."

Other residents mentioned that even after paying taxes, neither the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation nor the Gujarat Housing Board Society (GHBS) were paying attention to their demands.

Reacting to threatening calls to local residents, Sarabhai, said,"I have contested this election against this kind of autocratic behaviour in the present democratic system. People have to stand against this oppressive political method."

Another resident Rayamat Desai said, "We do not understand why instead of focusing on solving our civic issues they are threatening us with dire consequences. We need solutions for our basic problems."
