AHMEDABAD: The city elected its 27th and its fourth woman mayor on Tuesday. Meenakshi Patel, Jodhpur ward councillor, was unanimously elected for the post by a total of 151 votes in the general board meeting held at the Gandhi hall in the AMC Danapith central office. The congress fielded Vidha Vaja of the Gomtipur ward for the post. The board also elected a news deputy mayor Ramesh Desai, a municipal councillor from Amraiwadi ward.

Outgoing mayor Asit Vora, who completed his two and half year stint, conducted the voice voting procedure. The BJP s candidate's name was brought in a sealed cover to the general board hall by BJP leader in AMC Gautam Shah. This term for the mayor's post had been reserved for a woman candidate.

Meenakshi Patel was a clear choice of the BJP since the last fortnight, with another councillor Bijal Patel doing the rounds. The city has got three women mayors, the first being Bhavna Dave, Malini Atit and Anisa Mirza, who enjoyed the longest stint as mayor.

"Meenakshi's name was expected as the new west zone was to get a representation to the post. The election of Ramesh Desai from the Bharwad community was also a political choice keeping the coming general elections in mind. The two candidates were a choice of the revenue and urban development minister Anandi Patel, " says a senior BJP member of the standing committee.

In her first address to the board Meenakshi said, "Iam here to continue the work that has been handed over to me by my former colleague Asit Vora. A lot has been achieved till date and I will ensure that we continue the good work and reach out to every aspect of society and fulfil their needs,"

Meenakshi also referred to making Sheth VS hospital as a "corporate" hospital, which till now has been one of the few bastions for the poor of the city to get treatments.

Outgoing mayor Vora in his last address to the board said, "We have never digressed from our aim of development , despite obstacles, despite barbs from our critics. I congratulate the opposition to help us perform better as an organisation." Vora also credited the time bound implementing of Jnnurm funded projects which includes the Brts, several flyovers, civic networks and rail bridges that the Amc built during Voras five years tenure as a standing committee chairman and then again as the mayor.
